AGA Classic Cooker

(Was known as the AGA 7 Series 'R7')

AGA Three Oven in White

The AGA Classic is a new name for the AGA 7 Series R7. (Only the name has changed.)
The R7 had a number of updates on its predecessor, which was the all-electric AGA Dual Control Cooker, adding extra settings and more accurate electronic temperature control for the ovens with some cosmetic tweaks and updates.

As before there are two controls; one for the ovens (which work together and are normally on all the time, like the Dual Control and traditional AGAs) and another for the hotplates which are normally off and are turned on when you need them.

Extra Temperature Settings

You can select one of four temperature settings for the ovens:

Three-quarter / Slumber - this is a lower setting, not officially for cooking but since the ovens are at three-quarters of their normal heat it is possible if you're crafty with which oven you use (the roasting oven, usually 240C is then about 190C, and the others are also proportionately lower).
It's most likely to use this setting when you don't need to cook but do want some warmth to the room - whilst you're away in winter, or if you're not using the cooker for a day or two but don't want to have a cold AGA in the kitchen.
Heating from three-quarter / slumber to normal - about three and a half hours.

Low - a reduced setting with the ovens about 10 degrees celsius lower than 'Normal'. As long as you adjust your cooking times it's fine for cooking in this mode.
Heating from low to normal - about two and a half hours.

Normal - as you'd think! The ovens are at standard AGA cooking temperatures. This is the mode to use for day to day cooking and is what all the recipes in the AGA Cookbook are based on.

High (or Boost) - heats the ovens by an extra 10 degrees celsius. It adds extra stored heat to the cast-iron ovens so if you have a big day of cooking planned you're starting at a higher point, plus, it gives you some extra heat for things like bread or Yorkshire Puddings that cook better this way. (Quick tip - if you're doing a big meal do your Yorkshire Puddings first, whilst the oven's hottest, then reheat in the simmering oven before serving).
Heating from normal to high / boost - about two hours.
Cooling from high / boost to normal - about two and a half hours.

The ovens are controlled manually (not programmable) and since they're all heated by one element (with cast-iron conduction plates to direct the heat in the correct proportions to the different ovens) make sure to allow time (see above) when you change the setting.

The hot-plates heat up very quickly - 8 minutes for the simmering plate and 12 minutes for the boiling plate.

As a general recommendation - if you're not going to use a hot plate for an hour or longer then turn it off. If you'll be using it again within an hour then leave it on and put the insulating lid down.

The AGA R7 is a simple to use, adaptable cooker. Great for adding the gentle 'AGA' warmth to the room with the flexibility to reduce the heat-output (and running costs).

AGA Classic (R7) 100 (Three oven)

Two hot-plates: on the left a fast boiling plate (12 minute heat-up from cold) and on the right a simmering plate (8 minute heat-up from cold).

Three ovens: at the top right, a roasting oven and below that is a simmering oven. The third oven is at the bottom left and the fourth door at the top left is for access to the controls.

Classic 100 plus 50cm Module [R7 150] (Five Oven)

Two hot-plates: on the left a fast boiling plate (12 minute heat-up from cold) and on the right a simmering plate (8 minute heat-up from cold). There's also a warming plate on the top of the 'hotcupboard'.

Five ovens: at the top right, a roasting oven, below that is the simmering oven. Top left is a slow cooking oven and bottom left is the plate-warming oven. The baking oven is in the middle at the bottom and above it is a sixth door for access to the controls.

Induction Hob

There's also an option to have a single-zone induction hob instead of the hotcupboard's warming plate.

50cm Module (previously named 'Hotcupboard' or 150, or five Oven)

(The extra two ovens that turn the three in to the five oven)

Independent of the main AGA, the 50cm module has a slow-cooking oven at the top, a plate-warming oven below, and a warming plate on top. It has just one switch - so it's either all on, or all off.

There's the option to have a single-zone induction hob instead of the warming plate on the top.

Maintenance

The manufacturers say that regular servicing is not required.

Electrical Requirements

AGA Classic 100
(Three oven)

A 32amp cooker circuit

Note: External Oven Vent Kit

If you specify the external oven vent kit for either model [100 or 150] this is fed from within the AGA at extra-low voltage [24V].

AGA Classic with 50cm Module 150 / 150i
(Five Oven)

A 32amp cooker circuit.

An additional 13amp socket for the 50cm Module to plug in to. **Socket MUST be to the left side**

Ideal Solution: Install a 45 or 50 amp cooker control with integral socket outlet - the 'main' cooker can use the cooker supply and 50cm Module can plug in to the socket. This MUST be to the left side of the module.

Oven Venting

The Classic AGAs are all-electric and don't have a flue or chimney.

As standard they all have 'Room Vented' ovens.

If it's practical to do so you can specify the external oven vent kit (at extra cost).

This consists of a 28mm diameter copper pipe that runs horizontally from the back of the cooker to a small stainless steel fan box (switched from inside the AGA's control door) that mounts on the wall outside.

Electric AGA External Oven Vent Fan

There are limits and restrictions to the route of the pipe - generally a maximum of 4-6m depending on the number of bends and the pipe can't go up at all, it needs to gently fall to outside but not go so low that it falls below the base of the cooker.

Note Only the cast-iron ovens that are vented to outside and it's not a high powered system - if you open the oven door during cooking the steam will still come in to the room, and, if you're cooking something with a very high moisture content, or is very 'fatty' and spits a lot you might still get some cooking smells or steam in to the room even with the fan on.

The external vent does not extract from the top of the AGA nor from the hotcupboard's two ovens.

All AGA Classic cookers are recommended to have an extractor above the cooker.

Approximate Fuel Consumption

Ovens only (excludes hotplate use):

AGA Classic 100 with Electric Ovens

Electricity: approximately 170kWh/week
(at the 'low' setting)

Hotcupboard

Electricity: 54kWh/week
